The Encore Department is made up of all of the course electives available at Shue-Medill. The courses that make up the Encore Department are Art, Music Appreciation, Foreign Language, Physical Education, Computer Education, Technology Education, Career and Technology, Consumer Science, Junior Achievement, Music Appreciation, Chorus, Band, Orchestra, AVID, and Talent Development. Some of our Encore classes are semester long while others, like Band, Chorus, Orchestra, AVID, and Talent Development are full year courses.
The Technology Education Program is one that allows for students to gain basic skills in using tools, applying critical thinking to projects, and be creative. Students are given projects that lend themselves to today’s technologies and inventions.
This program is geared towards students who want to excel in their education. This program is geared toward helping students enroll in rigorous courses at the middle school level and hopefully at the high school level. The idea is for the students to then continue on with their education and attend college and earn either a 2 or 4-year degree.
Shue-Medill’s Music Department proudly boasts a roster of talented and dedicated students involved in Band, Choir and Orchestra in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. The school is extremely fortunate to have top caliber instructors, who are accomplished performers outside of the classroom; they are Band Director- Mr. Lloyd Walton, Choir Director- Mrs. Rachel Snyder, and Orchestra Director- Ms. Rosaria Macera.
Family & Consumer Science is a discipline that covers a variety of life skills needed for personal and family growth. It is the one discipline where students learn how to set goals, make decisions, evaluate resources and improve communication skills. Some of the topics studied in sixth grade include clothing care & coordination, self-esteem building, problem solving techniques, goal setting, anger management, personal hygiene and family relationships.
