ELA stands for English/Language Arts. The 6,7,and 8th grade programs encompass all aspects of reading and writing. Our main focus is comprehension using reading strategies to assist in understanding. Also, each grade focuses on a deeper understanding of writing for all purposes. All grades use a variety of written texts such as fiction, poetry, non-fiction, informational, and persuasive pieces. Understanding literary devices such as setting, characters, plot events, and vocabulary aide in all around comprehension. Each grade is focusing on a data-driven goal to address weaknesses in specific areas of ELA. In addition, individual student data is used to differentiate lesson planning and ensuring that teachers are meeting the needs of all students while providing them an opportunity for success.
UPDATE as of 11/8/11: ELA has finished introducing all 6thgraders to the extended thinking strategy of constructing support. We are all using RARE, or a tweaked version depending on students' grade. As students move on from 6th to 7th, we are asking that they add more examples from the text with parenthetical citations.
