Shue-Medill - Students

AVID PROGRAM
(Advancement Via Individual Determination )

This program is geared towards students who want to excel in their education. This program is geared toward helping students enroll in rigorous courses at the middle school level and hopefully at the high school level. The idea is for the students to then continue on with their education and attend college and earn either a 2 or 4-year degree. In order to do this, the program offers students time during the school day to focus on organizational skills, study skills, tutorial sessions, and team building activities. It also encourages the students to become individuals who can speak up for what is right. This program is geared toward 6th, 7th and 8th graders at Shue-Medill Middle School.

The AVID program will hold two recruitments throughout the year. Both recruitments will use similar criteria when selecting students. The criteria for acceptance into the program is data from Math and Reading MAP scores, G.P.A., low attendance record, low behavior record, teacher recommendations, and an interview between Site Team members and possible AVID students. One of the recruitments will take place in the fall for the same school year and the second recruitment will take place in the spring for the next school year.

APASS

Welcome! This will be a great year for you in the AVID class. The AVID class is designed to help you achieve your personal best. This will be done through WICR, writing-inquiry-collaboration-reading. You, as a student, will also focus on organizational and study skills. Each week you will have the chance to work toward your individual goals. Team building activities will also be part of the program. Time will also be set aside for you to receive help in your subject areas.

You will be graded in a couple of areas: binders, class work, homework, and class participation. Binder checks will take place on a weekly basis and will be 30% of your grade. Class work, homework, and class participation will make up the other 70% of your AVID grade.

To be successful, you need to make sure you are present in your classes. If you are absent, then it is your responsibility to ask me what you have missed. However many days you are absent, that is the number of days you have to make up the work you missed.

Materials required for this course are the following:

  • Binder (which is to be used for all classes)
  • Dividers for each subject (ELA, Math, Science, SS, AVID)
  • Pens, pencils, highlighter
  • Loose-leaf paper
  • Calendar to record assignments (short-term and long-term)

To achieve your personal best, your behavior needs to be age appropriate. The expectation is for you to enter the room ready to learn. Being positive and respectful are two behaviors that are very important to me and hopefully they will be to you as well.
