A Mentor Program for Middle School Girls
What is “EMPOWERING YOUNG LADIES”?
“Empowering Young Ladies (EYL)” is a mentoring program geared specifically towards middle school girls and will target girls with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn. EYL has four initiatives designed to promote, cultivate and encourage high scholastic achievement through:
1) Leadership Development
2) Educational Enrichment
3) Civic Engagement
4) Character Building
OVERVIEW
The increasing demands of the 21st Century have amplified the need for our youth to be educated and exposed to innovative opportunities to secure a strong foundation and to achieve personal success. Research studies support the position that middle school is an incredibly crucial period in an adolescent’s life. Our young girls today deal with issues such as becoming a teenager, parental and peer relationships, hormonal changes, body development /image and the media. EYL’s program trainers are a group of multi-faceted women, teachers and other volunteers within the Shue Medill Middle School community who will guide, lead and mentor these wonderful, future women leaders!

OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the “Empowering Young Ladies (EYL)” program are to help alleviate problems concerning women and girls as they improve social stature, and to help maintain a progressive interest in college life.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES
To ensure academic excellence while providing learning that develops skills and meaningful experiences for life-long application. As a result, EYL will be a guiding force that molds middle school girls into productive and contributing citizens of tomorrow. Some indicators of the program’s success includes but is not limited are: Election to Office, Zero Early Teen Pregnancy, Zero Juvenile Justice System Contact, Recognition for Excellence, Improved Relationships, Improved Self-Esteem, Improved Self Control, Global Awareness, Enhanced Technology Skills and Enhanced Community Service.
PROGRAM CRITERIA

Open to middle school girls in grades 6, 7, and 8 enrolled in target school.

The applicant must submit all of the following forms:
1. A completed counselor/teacher recommendation form.
2. A typed personal statement (not to exceed 500 words) which articulates why she desires to be in the EYL Program.
3. A completed parental consent and release form.

The applicant must maintain a C+ grade point average or its equivalent and must show marked effort, improvement or success each grading period.

The applicant must agree to follow instructions, be cooperative and well-behaved while participating in the program.

DIRECTORS’ CORNER
Mrs. Reneé Nelson and Mrs. Greta Wilkerson-El are experienced teachers who saw the need to implement a program that would help a diverse population of middle school girls in 6, 7, and 8 grades.
Mrs. Nelson is an educator of mathematics. Mrs. Wilkerson-El is an educator with students of various special needs. Both are teachers at Shue-Medill Middle School.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE
October 2011 – June 2012
Monday and Thursday
2:15 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
The school’s food service will provide a snack for all registered participants. All weekly after school programs are provided an activity bus for transportation home.
Bi-Monthly Special Events/ Activities
Saturday: 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Location: Shue-Medill Middle School
NOTE: Transportation to and from these special events is not provided.
