PTA Community Service Recognition

This year the Shue Medill PTA will be recognizing students who perform Community Service at non-profit or church organizations. Volunteering is a great way to gain leadership skills, get involved with your community, build new relationships and most importantly, make a difference.

Students who perform at least 10 hours of Community Service during a marking period will be recognized by being invited to the Honors Celebration. The student from each grade that has performed the most Communtiy Service hours for the year will be recognized at the year end Awards Ceremony.

What Counts---

Any time spent out of school working with a non-profit organization. These organizations take any profits and donate them to the community at large. Church organization activities can also count if the money raised is being donated for a mission or back to the community at large. One example is the Food Bank of Delaware. All donated items and money go directly to the people in need. Any events or projects that you help with through these organizations also counts, i.e. walk-a-thons, food drives, etc. School sponsored activities, such as clean up days, also count for volunteer hours.

What Does Not Count--

Any time volunteering for an organization that exists to generate a profit. i.e. working for free for a store, restaurant, etc. In addition, babysitting for family or friends will not count. Hours mandated by a court order or helping individiual teachers at school will not count.

How To Find Volunteer Opportunities--

Opportunities to make a difference in your community are all around us. For a list of ideas go to Delaware's Volunteeer Website at www.volunteerdelaware.org

How To Get Credit For Volunteer Hours--

An Officer or Event Coordinator for the non-profit or church organization would give you a letter on their letterhead with your name, the number of hours you volunteered, what work you performed and the mission of the non-profit organization. At the bottom or back of the letter the student should write their name again, their grade and homeroom number. These letters would then be submitted to the PTA, by giving them to the secretary at the front office, before the last day of each marking period (10/29, 1/21, 3/25, 6/3) or by having the organization mail the letter to: Shue Meditll PTA, 1500 Capitol Trail, Newark, DE 19711.

Join Shue-Medill M.S. PTA

You're the kind of person who cares about children and so are we. We are the Shue-Medill M.S. PTA, and we support improvement in education, more resources, safe schools and overall wellness for every child. Through the middle school years and beyond, your child's development never stops and neither do we.

When you join PTA, you join with millions who care about the issues that affect our students, our children. Everyone is welcome; membership is open to anyone who is concerned with the education, health and welfare of children and youth.

Volunteers are always needed, but if you are unable to donate your time, please do not feel that you cannot join PTA. Your membership alone shows support for our efforts. That said, if you are available to volunteer your time, please know that you are welcome! Extra hands are always needed and we can never have too many parents, staff and community members involved!

Your PTA membership means:

  • Making a difference in the lives of all children and youth
  • Supporting appropriate legislation to improve laws, policies and conditions on behalf of children
  • Obtaining valuable information, news and services to keep you informed about key issues affecting children
  • Growing personally by getting to know other Shue-Medill families and staff members through the events and programming sponsored by both PTA and the school
  • Joining forces with Delaware PTA, an organization that exclusively advocates on behalf of all children

Join Shue-Medill M.S. PTA today by completing our PTA Membership Form. Thank you for your support and we look forward to working with you!

Box Tops For Education

On certain food and supply products you will find the Box Tops for Education. Cut out these emblems and forward them to the Shue Medill PTA. Money can be earned for our school by submitting these emblems to the boxtops4education organization. The more emblems submitted, the more money to be made for our school. For every 10 Box Tops submitted your student will receive one APASS. The Box Tops need to be put in a bag or envelope clearly labeled PTA with the number of Box Tops enclosed written on the outside of the bag or envelope and given to your student's homeroom teacher.
