*Please note: During shortened school weeks or state test weeks, the homework schedule will not be in effect. Depending on the content studied throughout the week in class, some weeks may not have any assigned vocabulary words. However, there is assigned reading given every night unless the students have completed the novel. The assigned reading is usually between 3 and 7 pages in length. All students should have a copy of the homework schedule for the year, which remains consistent with the novels we cover in class and at home for homework. There is a variety of creative work assigned such as poetry, essays, and book projects, as well. These creative assignments will be posted and detailed throughout the year once they are assigned.*

Week 1/30- 2/3

All English classes have resumed their third novel of the school year. I am very pleased with the students' progress as we continue reading, discussing, and analyzing aspects of literature. All English classes will begin the fourth novel next week on Thursday, February 9th. This week, DCAS testing continues until Wednesday, February 1st. Because of the testing schedule, there is no assigned vocabulary words for the week.

During all English classes this week, students will begin learning and reviewing paraphrasing skills in preparation for the upcoming research paper. Paraphrasing will be introduced, practiced, and scored this week during class. There will no homework assigned this week, as long as students are present and working on paraphrasing in class during the week.

Week 1/9- 1/13

I would like to congratulate the Yellow Group on their completion of their third novel! The Yellow Group will not be assigned any reading this week. However, the Green and Orange groups have been assigned pages of reading each night this week in the novels. Below are the assigned pages for Monday, January 9th:

Orange Group: Please read up to page 277 in The Hunger Games

Yellow Group: On Wednesday in class, the Yellow Group will be given a project paper on the novel Monster. This project will be due next Wednesday, January 18th.

Green Group: Please read up to page 220 in The Secret Life of Bees

There are no journals assigned this week. All English classes will be given reading comprehension passages along with multiple choice questions in preparation for the DCAS testing at the end of the month on Wednesday and Thursday night. During class, we will be reading our novels and completing questions on the reading.  In addition, all English classes will be assigned short reading passages followed by various activities on the reading to complete in groups.

ACE Questions pages 40-46#18,19,20,46 &47

Remember to use your flow charts on multiplication to help you with your HW.

When solving problems using multiplication with fractions you can follow your steps from the flow chart or use the models we made in class using the squares

example  1/2 X 3/4  multiply the numerators so 1 x 3=3 and multiply the denominators 2 x 4=8

So the answer is 3/8

News! (Look here for what your student is doing this week!)

This week we will be continuing to discuss the major documents that created our nation while finishing up our discussion on  the Delcaration of Independence and beginning our discussion on the United States Constitution. Students will finish working  in groups on a group project: Students Declaration of Rights. Students will use the directions given and their understanding of the Declaration of Independence to create a declaration for thier own student rights as teenagers in the United States today. Groups will be given detailed directions on what to have in thier declarations and will be guided through the process. The goal for this assignment is for the students to gain an understanding of how the colonists felt when they created the Declaration of Independence, but to also think about thier lives today and what would be important for them to include in a declaration for their rights.  After completing our activities on  the Declaration of Independence,  we will then be moving into activities on the  United States Constitution. Students will work on several items concerning the United States Constitution. Students will read about the United States Constitution, summarize each part and answer questions in partners, and complete a Constitution Scavenger Hunt using the website from the Constitution Center. (http://ratify.constitutioncenter.org/constitution/ ) Students will be given computer lab time in school to complete this assignment. Brief Summary of Current Unit of Study:  Properties of Matter: The focus of this unit is the physical properties that characterize matter. Students examine characteristic properties including density, solubility, and melting and boiling points. The particle model is utilized to illustrate how materials behave under different conditions (changes in temperature and pressure). The link is made between the increase/decrease of energy and the behavior of the materials.

Odd numbered classes (3,5, and 9) - "Density Problem" assigned on Tuesday, February 7th and due Thursday, February 9th.

Even numbered classes (2, 6, and8) - "Density Problem" assigned on Monday, February 6th and due Wednesday, February 8th.

Read 180 has no assigned homework. However, I will use this page to keep interested parties informed about instruction occurring in the classroom

Currently we are completing a workshop on natural disasters. The study of natural disasters will be a vehicle for acquiring a strategy for determining the sequence of events in a text. We will emphasize the use of signal words and transitional words. Examples of these words are : first, next, prior, at last. A final project will be a handbook on how to prepare for the natural disasters most common to Delaware.

Vocabulary words for Work shop 2: Natural disasters are:

Destruction Major, Prevent, Recovery, Severe, Focus, Cycle, Increase, Degree, Abandon

Please encourage your child to explain what each word means as it applies to a natural disaster. If your child is not aware of it's meaning; let me know and I will send a study sheet.

Students in Read 180 completed a second round of testing. Read 180 students complete the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) four time a year. This test is used to specifically measure increases in reading levels. Overall, the students demonstrated growth in reading skills. Students also participated in DCAS testing which is a state mandated test for assessing Language Arts and Math ability. Although there were disappointments, conferences are currently being held with each child who did not improve. The purpose is to identify behaviors they may be able to improve upon so that their score will increase during spring testing. We did have a significant number of students who did improve and I have every intention of treating them to lunch as a reward for their hard work.

1/30/12

DCAS is definitely taking a toll on the kids. Please make sure they are rested and ready to go to show major improvement. So many are making leaps and bounds with their scores.

Also, every student in FOUNDATIONS has been given an agenda, an actual book to use to record homework. Please make sure you are asking your child for the agenda to help home and school stay on the same page. Have a great week!

1/23/12

NEW MARKING PERIOD! Contracts are coming home to be signed. From this point forth, it is all about committment. It takes four parties: You, your child, me, and the administrators. We can make your child successful!

1/19/12

Hello FAMILIES! I apologize, I have been out sick for a few days. Your children are currently working towards the end of second marknig period. Some of us still have some work to make up. There is not as much time in class as we are focused on DCAS prep for math and ELA. We are using Reciprocal Teaching and Peer Assisted Learning to assist us with comprehension. There will be some schedule changes affective Monday due to various class switches and those of us exiting the program.

12/6/11

It was so good to talk to so many of you between conferences and phone calls. Your children are doing so well. Just to update: I have finished giving the diagnostic test for ELA and we will be working on our areas of weakness over the next few weeks. I do continue to remind the kids that Foundations is for assistance and support, and it is not a study hall. Please continue to support that thought by reinforcing that homework is done at home. Thank you so much! Look forward to seeing those who have offered to volunteer to come in and work with all the students. :)

11/8/11

Hello families! Time is flying bye so fast. I cannot believe it. I have recently started enforcing the use of agendas in the classroom. Students are to show me the agendas every time they report to class. Please use the agenda as a tool for communication and to open the lines of communication with your child. Have a good week.

10/31/11

Happy Halloween or Happy Monday! I will be updating the homework hotline every week. As students continue to progress through their other classes, I will post ideas for support at home and information about what we are doing in class.

Currently, students are reviewing text structure in Foundations. Students will have to use text structure in ELA to explain different genres similarities and differences. With the end of the marking period behind us (10/28), students will check their HOME ACCESS so there are no surprises. It is important that students advocate for themselves as much as possible.

Likewise, students are setting long-term DCAS goals. Some are also working on behavior or attendance goals. Please continue to contact me with any concerns.

Look for information on Parent Conferences. They are coming up in the next few weeks. :)

10/11/2011

Hello again! We are moving right along. Many students have just completed the first round of DCAS testing. As a result, many of the students have set new goals to achieve proficiency or higher in DCAS. Please ask your child about his or her goal.

9/12/2011

Hello families! I do not make it a habit to assign homework for Foundations. Since this is a support class, it is important that your child keep up on homework within his other classes.

Please contact me with any questions: 750-3475

Looking forward to a great year!

Week of December 5, 2011

We are working in Shapes and Designs Investigation 2

Homework: December 6, 2011: Draw angels of given estmated measure using the benchmark angle of 90 degrees.

Homework December 8, 2011:  Sketching Symmetry

Week of November 28:

  • Polygons: Properties of polygons
  • Basic geometry review: plane, point, line. line segment, ray, angle, angle classifications
  • Vocabulary test Friday

November 29:  Homework- Cut out shpaes on handout and place (glue or tape) in correct category on  provided T-Chart

November 14:

Wrapping up Fraction Unit Bits 1:

  • Special focus on fractional part of a whole number quantity.
  • Find the difference between two fractions (subtraction)
  • Portfolio Conferences Thursday
  • Assessment Friday Nov 18

Week of November 7:

  • We will be moving from fractions to decimals this week. We have already had some experiences with changing fractions to decimals and percents.
  • Special attention needs to be given to finding a fraction between two given fractions.  For example, find a fraction between 1/5 and 2/5.  This can be accomplished by writing equivalent fractions for 1/5 and 2/5 with a larger denominator.  When expressed as tenths, it is easy to see that the fraction 3/10 is between 1/5 and 2/5.

Monday Nov 7: Part 2 of Inv 1 Review. This was begun in class. Finish for homework and do the two "find a fraction between 1/5 and 2/5; and between  6/8 and 7/8"

Tuesday, Nov 8: Teacher made review sheet, comparing fractions, equivalent fractions, find a fraction betwween two given fractions.

November 10: Test. Fractions and decimals. Review shee will be provided.

Week of October 31, 2011

We are still working in Bits and Pieces 1, currently in Investigation 2.  We have been practicing equivalent fractions, Mixed numbers to improper fractions, recognizing and naming fraction models, finding fractional parts of a whole, and using benchmarks to order fractions.

Students should be able to tell if a fraction is less than, equal to, or greater than 1/2 by comparing the numerator and denominator.

Numerator = half of denominator: the fraction = 1/2

Numerator less than half the denominator: the fraction < 1/2

Numerator greater than half the denominator: the frations > 1/2.

Halloween: No homework

Tuesday, Nov. 1: Complete class work on Exponents review sheet, and complete 2.3A on Bitspage 24.

October 27, 2011 : Additional Practice Investigation 1. CMP Worksheet

October 26, 2011:  Comparing fractions practice sheet.

October 24, 2011: You child should be able to show you how to generate equivalent fractions. This would be good reinforcement of the skill.

Week of October 17, 2011: CMP Grade 6

Reminder: Students received a vocab sheet for the first part of the Bits and Pieces Unit.

Monday:  H.W. Complete next three terms on vocab sheet.

Tuesday: We take a portion of a skills test to determine what we know and what we need to know

                  Begin Investigation 1.1

                 Explore fraction parts.

Wednesday: Complete 1.1 Homework: Ordering fractions.

WEEK OF OCTOBER 10, 2011:

This week we are wrapping up the Prime Time Unit, and beginning Bits 1, a unit that focuses on fractions.

Real Life Math:    Your child can gain experience with fractions by helping with food preparation. Let your child find the correct measuring cup or spoon giving him a "hands on" lesson in  the relative size of fractions.

 October 13

Thursday. Get your Parent letter signed and return it on Friday.

October 12

Tests were returned today. 3 points may be earned with a parent signature tomorrow only.

Organize your binder. There will be a math binder check on Friday.

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians:

This semester in Technology Education, we will be providing some new and exciting curricula that we’re sure your child will love.  That’s right, a class your child should love!  This is the class where they can be creative; express themselves through hands-on experiences that will give them lasting memories.

The classes are an eighteen week course that explores technology in its past, present and future.  This will be done through a variety of modules and projects completed with combinations of materials processing, problem solving and good old common sense.  We’re excited to get the semester started so the fun can be begin.

Necessary materials expected for class include:

The following rules help class go very smoothly – Honest.

  • Homework assignments, though few, are expected to be done on time, as they are critical to teacher’s planning.
  • Since the bathrooms are next to the “Tech Ed” room, you are expected to use the lavatory before you come to class.  Please inform teachers if there is a medical problem that requires your child to use the bathroom more frequently.
  • All students are expected to participate daily.  A lot of what we do is time based.  We must adhere to due dates.  Teachers will make adjustments when necessary.
  • Students will ask teachers permission to use machines and equipment in class.  Failure to do so could lead to alternative assignments.
  • Outside computer discs will be confiscated and only returned when a parent/guardian pick them up.  They are not allowed in school.
