*Please note: During shortened school weeks or state test weeks, the homework schedule will not be in effect. Depending on the content studied throughout the week in class, some weeks may not have any assigned vocabulary words. However, there is assigned reading given every night unless the students have completed the novel. The assigned reading is usually between 3 and 7 pages in length. All students should have a copy of the homework schedule for the year, which remains consistent with the novels we cover in class and at home for homework. There is a variety of creative work assigned such as poetry, essays, and book projects, as well. These creative assignments will be posted and detailed throughout the year once they are assigned.*
Week 5/7-5/11
I would like to congratulate all the English classes for completing their fifth novel of the school year. All students have made me very proud, and I've enjoyed observing their progress as readers, writers, and verbal communicators.
For the entire week of May 7th through May 11th there is DCAS testing in Reading. Because all English classes have resumed their novels, students are asked to simply rest well during the testing week, and are encouraged to read anything of interest on their own during the week for homework.
There have been five journals assigned on the novels just completed. Next week, all students will have a new list of vocabulary words and be placed into groups to compose a short novel together as the final project of the school year.
Week 2/27- 3/2
I would like to congratulate all the English classes for completing their research papers last week. Any students who were absent any days last week need to complete their papers along with a Works Cited page this week in order to receive a "Pass" for the 8th grade computer literacy requirement.
English classes will resume the usual schedule this week. There are 15 vocabulary words assigned this week. The words begin with dexterous and end with exodus. The test on these words will be on Friday, March 2nd. Students are expected to study the words during the week for homework and create 15 vocabulary study cards. All students are reading their fourth novel. There is assigned reading every night this week. Please see below for the assigned pages for Monday evening:
Orange- Please read Catching Fire up to page 123.
Green- Please read Hunger Games up to page 120.
Yellow- Please read Hunger Games up to page 120.
Lastly, all English classes have been assigned three journals on the reading this week for homework. The journals are due by Friday, March 2nd.
Week 2/13- 2/16
During this week in class, all English groups will be continuing their work on their research papers. All students should be completed writing all four paragraphs of the rough draft no later than Thursday, February 16th. Absent students and those having computer issues at home have until Tuesday, February 21st, to complete their rough drafts. I look forward to observing strong writing skills and positive progress as we begin typing the research papers in the library early next week.
Beginning Tuesday night, all students have assigned reading in their novels at home. Aside from the research paper, class work this week will focus on reading, discussing, and addressing key aspects within the novels. Over the holiday weekend, all students will be assigned three comprehension questions on the assigned reading at home.
