Shue-Medill - Students

PARENT FAQS

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP YOUR CHILD BE SUCCESSFUL?

School success requires a strong three-way partnership among student, home and school. Success requires a student commitment to be responsible and work hard; a home commitment to provide clear expectations and consistent support; and a school commitment to offer effective instruction and assistance. In order to achieve a high level of success, everyone involved needs to work together.

Active participation by all parents/guardians is a great way to support student success. By joining the PTA, serving as a PTA officer, or volunteering with school projects and activities, an adult can show they are truly committed to their student's success.

Communication among student, school, and home is also significant for student success. We distribute report cards every nine weeks and interims are sent halfway through the marking period. A parent/guardian needs to clearly communicate expectations to their student and contact the teacher, counselor, or office is there is a question or problem. Shue-Medill gives all students a student planner (agenda) to use to organize their work so parents can easily monitor effort and success. Working together as a team, we can all help your student to be successful.

WHAT IS PBIS?

Schools are successful when they help children grow academically, socially and emotionally. In order for this to happen, it is imperative that we have a safe environment that is supportive and conducive to growth. By setting forth clear social and behavior expectations and directly teaching and practicing those expectations, an atmosphere for learning is created. Shue-Medill implements a PBIS - Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports.

WHAT ARE SCHOOL HOURS:

  • Students are released from the buses at 7:10am.
  • Homeroom begins at 7:20am with the 1st period beginning at 7:30am
  • Students are dismissed for the day at 2:02pm
  • Parents transporting their children and/or students walking should plan to arrive at Shue-Medill by 7:15am

STUDENT / BUS / AUTOMOBILE SAFETY

For the safety of everyone involved we are asking that you do not drop off your child at the entrance to the Shue-Medill complex between 7:00am and 7:30am. Cars should stay to the far side of the light poles closest to the school and drop students off there. Please emphasize to your child that they must be aware of the moving buses at all times. There are approximately 37 buses assigned to the school arriving at 7:00am. The buses have priority to use the front area of the school, and at times, there are a number of buses moving through that area at one time. We are suggesting that you drop your child at the entrance to the Medill building for safety reasons.

If you have to pick up your child at dismissal time, please do not park in the bus area. This is in effect from 1:40-2:10pm. Please park in the back of the staff parking lot.

WHAT IS THE DRESS CODE?

Students are expected to dress in an appropriate and tasteful manner. Short shorts, muscle shirts, half shirts, biker shorts and lycra pants are not permitted. Hats, coats, and jackets are to be kept in students' lockers. Shirts, jackets, buttons, etc., on which comments are written that could be considered profane or sexually suggestive, will not be allowed. Clothing, make-up, and accessories which display messages or symbols that are offensive, sexually suggestive, vulgar, demeaning or inflammatory, which encourage the use of drugs or alcohol, or which promote violent, illegal or anti-social behavior are inappropriate and not acceptable.
