Shue-Medill - Students

SPECIAL EDUCATION

Shue Medill Middle School includes a continuum of services for students with disabilities. These services and supports range in intensity from the inclusion setting to more specialized settings. In the inclusion setting, students are co-taught the general curriculum by both regular and special education teacher in the classroom. Accommodations and supports are provided in the general setting with opportunities for modifications as necessary. For students requiring more support than can be provided in the general classroom, a specialized setting is provided. In this setting, classes align with the standards, but groups are smaller and modifications greater.

INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATION PROGRAM (IEP)

Each Shue-Medill child who receives special education and related services must have Individualized Education Program (IEP). Each IEP must be designed for one student and must be a truly individualized document. The IEP creates an opportunity for teachers, parents, school administrators, related services personnel, and students (when appropriate) to work together to improve educational results for children with disabilities. The IEP is the cornerstone of a quality education for each child with a disability.

INCLUSIVE PRACTICES

Inclusive practices in special education reflect the intent of the law that children with disabilities be educated with their non-disabled peers to the greatest extent possible or appropriate. These laws set the precedent for all students, not just those with disabilities, to have the opportunity to be educated equally with their peers and disallow any child from being excluded, no matter how diverse from the general population the child may be. The Christina School District is currently implementing inclusive practices on a district-wide basis, following both state and federal laws.

R.E.A.C.H. PROGRAM

The R.E.A.C.H. (Realistic Educational Alternatives for Children with Disabilities) Program at Shue-Medill provides a functional life skills program that supports and serves students with more severe disabilities. In addition to support in our students' core subjects, elective courses are also provided for additional academic and organizational support. Our goal at Shue- Medill is to provide special education students with all of the accommodations and support they require while maximizing their access to the general curriculum and typical peers.
